THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 525 1991 May 30 17.59UT Ed:Guy M Hurst, 16,Westminster Close, Kempshott Rise, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP, England. Telephone: (0256)471074 Int:+44256471074 Telex: 9312111261 Answerback: TA G JANET BOXES: GMH at UK.AC.CAM.ASTRONOMY.STARLINK or GUYH at UK.AC.SUSSEX.CLUSTER TELECOM GOLD: 10074:MIK2885 PRESTEL 256471074 ------------------------------------------------------------------- INTERSPAN The above company are now operating a gateway between Telecom Gold and Janet/Starlink (in both directions). The system works by allocating a dummy Telecom Gold mailbox number to a Janet/Starlink user. To obtain this, the Janet user sends a mail message to a specified Gold user and, if the first occasion this has been used, a reply will come back from Interspan with the dummy box number. The format to be used in MAIL by the Janet user is (using the Editor's box as an example): cbs%mhs-relay::"/G=10074/S=MIK2885/O=Gateway to Gold /ADMD=Interspan/C=GB Although split to two lines for this circular, it can be typed as one continuous set of text and even though it overlaps to the second line it will still work. (There is no gap between Gold and /ADMD. As it is cumbersome, it can be stored in your login.com file. The whole entry is stored inside quotes as usual but it is therefore necessary to place double quotes after 'relay::' and also at the end of the entry. Once a dummy mailbox number has been allocated the Janet user can advise the details to the Gold users. They in turn can send messages back by typing mail followed by the dummy system and mailbox user numbers plus the usual subject in the normal way. The Editor has set up dummy mailbox numbers so that he can be reached by Telecom Gold users on all Janet/Starlink systems which are used: Sussex Cluster 10124:isl10064 Cavad 10124:isl10065 Rlsac 10124:isl10066 As far as we can tell the gateway is not available to send messages from Gold to users beyond Janet (eg overseas). As long as this gateway operates, with immediate effect Gold subscribers to the TA service can send messages to overseas contacts by routing them to my sussex cluster box using dummy box 10124:isl10064. Such messages should NOT be sent to 10074:MIK2885. The recipient details should be quoted in the subject line. Normally I can re-route within twenty-four hours. SUPERNOVA 1991ad IN ANONYMOUS GALAXY J. Mueller communicates: "On a blue plate taken by J. D. Mendenhall and myself on May 13 UT with the 1.2-m Oschin Telescope in the course of the second Palomar Sky Survey, I have discovered a supernova (mag 18.5) located in an anonymous galaxy at R.A. = 16h17m09s.7, Decl. = +17 45'56" (equinox 1950.0). SN 1991ad is 11".4 east and 2" north of the galaxy's center. A CCD frame taken with the Palomar 1.5-m telescope by J. R. Mould on May 17 shows a stellar image of mag 18.5 at this position. N. Reid notes that the object is not visible on a recent Sky Survey plate. A spectrum obtained by W. Baan and J. Salzer with the Hale 5-m telescope (+ double spectrograph) on May 21 shows broad absorption features at 570 and 615 nm, indicating a type-Ia supernova. The redshift of the galaxy is 20 900 km/s."
