Comets in 200119P/BorrellyImages: 2001 August 9 (Sostero et. al.), 2001 August 13 (Sostero et. al.), 2001 August 21 (Sostero), 2001 August 29 (Oksa), 2001 October 14 (Sostero).24P/SchaumasseMartin Mobberley took this image on 2001 February 13.822 using a 0.49m f/4.5 Newtonian with a MX916 CCD. The comet is currently as faint as mag 15 or 16 but it could reach magnitude 10 later in the Spring. Martin obtained futher images on 2001 March 13.829 and 2001 April 13.86. Gabriel Oksa made this drawing on 2001 April 17. and Gonano and Maestrutti obtained this image on 2001 April 29. Sostero et al obtained further images on 2001 May 19, 2001 June 11.29P/Schwassmann-WachmannImages: 2001 June 11 (Sostero et al), 2001 June 18 (Sostero), 2001 June 20 (Sostero).44P/ReinmuthImages: 2001 October 18 (Sostero), 2001 October 22 (Sostero).45P/Honda-Mrkos-PajdusakovaGabriel Oksa made this drawing on 2001 April 17 when the comet was only 13 degrees above his NW horizon. He comments that the coma is apparently more condensed than it was at the last apparition post-perihelion.51P/HarringtonThis comet suffered further splitting in 2001 December. Reported magnitudes at that time placed it considerably brighter than the 20th magnitude predicted. Each component was reported to be around 17th magnitude at the time of the split. Images: 2001 December 8 (Dembitzer et.al.), 2001 December 10 (Mobberley), 2001 December 11 (Mobberley).74P/Smirnova-ChernykhThis periodic comet was moving slowly through Leo in the spring of 2001. This image was obtained on 2001 March 30.91 by Nick James using a 0.30m Newtonian. He obtained a further image on 2001 April 24.89.P/2000 WT_168This cometary object was announced on IAUC 7584. This image was obtained on 2001 February 17 by Giovanni Sostero (Remanzacco Observatory). He writes: It seems to us that also in our picture there is a hint of an elongated coma at PA110 deg. The guide was set onto the object, so stars appear to be slightly trailed toward bottom-right.. Details: 0.3m f/2.8 Baker-Schmidt camera, Hi-Sis 24 CCD (Scale 2.4 arcsec/px), 15 minutes unfiltered exposure, Estimated magnitude: 16.7, possible (elongated) coma at PA110, 12arcsec diameter.P/2001 CV8 (LINEAR)Another LINEAR comet. Giovanni Sostero provides this image taken on 2001 February 15, 22h40m. Details are: Exposure 50 min, scale 2,4 arcsec/px, Baker-Schmidt 0.3m f/2.8, CCD Hi-Sis 24 (unfiltered), Estimated magnitude: 16,2 (GSC sequence), coma 10 arcsec, possible faint tail 25arcsec long in PA270 deg.P/2001 Q6 (NEAT)Images: 2001 October 23 (James).P/2001 TU80 (LINEAR-NEAT)Giovanni Sostero et. al. (Remanzacco Observatory) took this image on 2002 January 11 using an SBIG ST6V and a 0.3m f/2.8 Baker-Schmidt camera, 2002 March 4 (Sostero).C/1999 J2 (Skiff)2001 June 14.93 (Sostero).C/1999 T1 (McNaught-Hartley)This comet is quite a nice object in the morning sky as we move into 2001. This image taken on 2000 December 18.20 is a stack of 6 x 30 second unfiltered exposures obtained using a 0.3m f/2.8 Baker-Schmidt camera + Hi-Sys. 24 CCD. The scale is 4.8 arcsec/pix (Giovanni Sostero - Remanzacco Observatory - Italy). Another of Giovanni's images taken on 2000 December 22 at 0450 shows a possible ion tail in PA 290 when processed. Further images have been received from Pepe Manteca ( 2000 December 16, 10-inch f/6.3, ST-9) and Martin Mobberley (2000 December 31). Gabriel Oksa made this drawing on 2000 December 20.By the spring of 2001 this comet had a nice tail. This is well shown in this image taken on 2001 April 1 by Sostero and Donato. They also submitted an experimental colour image taken on 2001 April 1. Further images were obtained by Nick James on 2001 April 24.95. and Giovanni Sostero on 2001 April 27.00, 2001 June 18.91 C/1999 T2 (LINEAR)These two images taken on 2001 April 13/14 show the movement on the comet. Heinz Kerner obtained this composite using a 0.15m, f/5 refl. and a MX5 CCD. Each image is a 5 minute exposure. Giovanni Sostero obtained this image on 2001 April 23.97 using a 0.30-m baker camera + CCD + Johnson V filter. He comments that there is a possible tail, 10' long at P.A. 45 degrees. Further images were obtained by Nick James on 2001 April 24.92 and Giovanni Sostero et al. on 2001 April 27.06, 2001 May 19 and 2001 June 11.C/2000 SV74 (LINEAR)Images: 2001 September 9 (Sostero et. al.), 2001 September 12 (Sostero et. al.), 2001 October 14 (Sostero et. al.), 2001 November 4 (Sostero et. al.),C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR)This LINEAR comet may become a naked-eye object towards the end of 2001.
